My first romance novel was an independently published eBook. After participating in the Blog Tour de Force, Amber Scott emailed me asking if I would participate in a push to make her independently published work a bestseller for a day… on Valentine’s Day.
It was Friday night, and we had no pressing plans. I downloaded her book and checked it out. I was immediately hooked, and stayed up until 1 AM reading. I didn’t know romance novels could be so… enticing. *grin*
I took a short stab at writing erotica back in the day, but haven’t been inspired to write much more. I guess maybe I didn’t feel like I had a hand in that sort of work. Because while it may seem easy to throw down some fictional spice, a lot of writers confuse romance with light porn and end up with a crappy story with a handful of juicy sex scenes. I was pleased to discover that Scott managed the piece well, wrapping the story up in with some titillating steam.
Since Scott went with indie publishing, there’s a lot less buzz out there on the interwebz about this book. So I’m going to post the brief description:
Playing cupid isn’t a reward; it’s Millie’s punishment. If she doesn’t find repressed, divorcee, Brooke, true love in the next thirty days, Millie’ll lose the one thing in this life sentence worth fighting for, her partner. Just two problems: First, Millie sucks at matchmaking. Second, too young, too hot, Elliott keeps getting in Millie’s way.
Queue dirty music.
I could really get into the romance novel business. At least to read, if not write.
So, should you read this book?
I haven’t read enough (any) romance with which to compare Scott’s book. However, I have read a handful of indie books, and I can tell you that she did a pretty good job on it. There were only a couple of grammatical errors, probably ones which most readers won’t even notice. The content itself was catching enough that I couldn’t put it down. The pace was perfect. The length of the book was long enough to tell the story and short enough that it could be savored in one long evening. The characters were endearing, and the story line was seamless. Because of the price of the book ($2.99, I think?), it’s totally worth it.
Good luck, Amber Scott. I know the self-publishing industry can be brutal. I know you have what it takes to make it, though. And here’s my post to prove my faith in you!
My ranking:
Two flurs because it kept me going and I didn’t want to put it down. I don’t know that I’d read the book again, but I don’t know that romance novels are designed to be read again. The whole point is to keep you wanting more, not knowing what will come (ha, pardon the pun) next.

Thanks for reading, ya'll.
