Intimacies – Poems of Love by Pablo Neruda

I discovered Neruda after it being recommended and written about by Kelly at Ordinary Art. Because Kelly has never steered me wrong, I jumped on the suggestion.  As it turns out, I have been living under a rock because just about all of my logophile friends not only knew Neruda but loved him already.  So I felt a little… behind the times, so to speak.

However, now I know better.   Now I know the tenderness and delicacies of sweet morsels that are Neruda.  And like my general addiction to sugar, I can’t stop.

This book?  Is beautiful.  Here is one of the poems:

Ars Magnetica

From so much loving and journeying, books emerge.
And if they don’t contain kisses or landscapes,
if they don’t contain a man with his hands full,
if they don’t contain a woman in every drop,
hunger, desire, anger, roads,
they are no use as a shield or as a bell:
they have no eyes, and won’t be able to open them,
they have the dead sound of precepts.

I loved the entangling of genitals,
and out of blood and love I carved my poems.
In hard earth I brought a rose to flower,
fought over by fire and dew.

That’s how I could keep on singing.

My Ranking:

For the poetry, and

For the artwork. <3

Only instead of flurs, I want roses.  Or exotic, delicate wildflowers.

Additionally, I was careless not to mention the art in this book.  Mary Heebner is the artist, and her talent is immeasurable.  I absolutely LOVED the sensual and classy touch that Mary’s work added to this piece.  It isn’t just a book of poetry, it’s a work of art.  Each poem is prefaced with a beautiful painting created by Ms. Heebner.

Also, this book is bi-lingual, with the poems both in English and in Spanish.  As I’ve discovered from Kenia Cris‘ work initially, I feel that having the poetry in two languages adds to the seduction of the lines, and reminds me that poetry of the soul has no one love language, but many.

Mary!!! Oh how thoughtless of me. I did this review in a hurry. I will update my review because without your AMAZING art work, the book of poetry would be incomplete!

    hi,
In this poem Ars Magnetica the quote that catches my attention is this line”
From so much loving and journeying, books emerge.
And if they don’t contain kisses or landscapes,
if they don’t contain a man with his hands full,
if they don’t contain a woman in every drop,
    hunger, desire, anger, roads,
they are no use as a shield or as a bell:
    It touches me.
This reminds me of one thing……
